SUMMARY:Brahms on the Bluff\, Concert III: The Three Sonatas for Violin and Piano
DESCRIPTION:The violin and violinists played an important role throughout Brahms’s life and musical development. The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim was a major persona throughout Brahms’s life and became one of his closest friends and confidantes. The thread of their mutual influence is woven through this entire program. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Concertmaster David McCarroll\, following up on his Bluff Series debut last season\, partners with David Allen Wehr for this traversal of the three sonatas for violin and piano\, one of music’s most challenging and rewarding monuments. Duquesne Artist-in-Residence and world opera star Marianne Cornetti graces the stage of her alma mater\, joined by violist David Harding\, with their interpretation of the “Viola Songs\,” which marked Brahms’s attempt at healing an unusual rift in his relationship with Joachim. \nPre-concert conversation at 2:30p with Nicole Vilkner \n Three Sonatas for Violin and Piano \nDavid McCarroll\, violin \nDavid Allen Wehr\, piano \n Two Songs\, op. 91 \nMarianne Cornetti\, mezzo-soprano \nDavid Harding\, viola \nDavid Allen Wehr\, piano

SUMMARY:Brahms on the Bluff: Concert IV - Before the Beard
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Discussion with Barbara Nissman at 2:30 p.m. \nBrahms was age forty before he grew his famous beard\, and his more youthful music is often fiery and temperamental. Barbara Nissman brings her charisma and panache to Piano Sonata no. 3\, written when the composer had just turned twenty. Brahms waited for fifteen years before completing his next sonata\, this one for cello and piano\, which launched an eventual series of seven duos for piano and various instruments. Audience favorite Clancy Newman collaborates with David Allen Wehr in the first of these sonatas\, which highlights the composer’s deep interest in earlier styles of music (including the minuet and the fugue)\, and with Kevin Lee Sun in the second\, an outburst of intense emotion and virtuosity for both instruments. \nTwo Sonatas for Cello and Piano \nClancy Newman\, cello \nDavid Allen Wehr and Kevin Lee Sun\, pianists \n Piano Sonata #3 \nBarbara Nissman\, piano
